Influenza and pneumococcal immunizations
Regence wants to improve flu and pneumonia vaccination rates for our members. Studies show that your recommendation is the primary reason that patients receive preventive services, including vaccinations.
Due to the increased media attention on flu prevention with the H1N1 virus, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) posted updated guidelines in June.
As a reminder, please:
- Recommend vaccinations to each patient during their visit. Encourage patients to receive the pneumococcal or flu vaccine as soon as it is available. Remind patients who do not obtain the vaccination early in the flu season that they may still obtain it as late as March.
- Consider implementing standing orders. Implement electronic medical records or registry reminders to promote the use of these vaccinations within your practice.
- Educate your office staff. Help your staff be aware of Medicare coverage for annual flu and one-time pneumococcal vaccines with no out-of-pocket costs. Patients should contact their health plan to confirm coverage.
Key facts about vaccinations, including information in Spanish, are available for your patients.
